Where the Airport Is — and Why It Matters for the Journey
Phu Quoc Airport (IATA: PQC) sits in the southeast of the island, inland from the coast near An Thoi. Ong Lang is on the northwest coast, past Duong Dong town, about 25-30 km away by road. That puts the two points at roughly opposite ends of the island — not corner to corner, but close.
The road connects them logically: from the airport you head north on the main island artery (DT45/QL61C) for about 20 km to Duong Dong, cross through or around the town, and then continue a short distance up the coast to Ong Lang. The road is sealed and in decent condition the whole way. No ferries, no back-roads required.
The 30-40 minute time estimate assumes normal traffic. Duong Dong itself is the only real bottleneck — the main street through town slows down from about 7 AM to 9 AM and again around 5 PM, especially near the market. If your flight lands during those windows, budget an extra 10-15 minutes. Late evening arrivals (after 9 PM) are usually very smooth. What to expect when you arrive at Ong Lang.
Does Grab Work at Phu Quoc Airport?
It does, but with one catch. Grab drivers cannot queue at the official taxi rank — the rank is managed by fixed-price operators who pay for the concession. So when you exit the terminal, walk past the rank and out to the road (about 50-80 metres) and open the app there. You'll typically get a match in 2-5 minutes.
The Grab estimate to Ong Lang usually comes in at 280,000-380,000 VND ($11-15 USD). That figure moves with surge pricing — when two or three flights land within 30 minutes of each other, the app can spike to 420,000-450,000 VND. If that happens, wait 10 minutes for the queue to clear or accept a metered Mai Linh from the rank. The difference is rarely more than $2-3.
One thing you need: a working Vietnamese SIM or roaming data plan before you land, because you need internet access the moment you're standing outside the terminal. There's a SIM kiosk inside the arrivals hall (Viettel and Vietnamobile). Buying one takes 10 minutes and costs roughly 50,000-100,000 VND for a short-stay data plan. Worth it for Ong Lang arrivals, given how quiet the area is for walk-up taxis once you leave Duong Dong.
Taking a Metered Taxi from the Rank
Mai Linh is the main metered taxi company operating on Phu Quoc — white cars with a green logo. They run on the meter and are reliable. From the airport to Ong Lang, a metered fare normally comes to 350,000-450,000 VND ($14-18 USD). The journey time is the same 30-40 minutes.
The rank at the airport also has fixed-price operators. These are not necessarily a bad deal, but confirm the total before you load your bags. Quoted prices for Ong Lang tend to run 400,000-550,000 VND. If the driver won't turn on a meter and won't commit to a written price, find a different car.
One note we give every guest: mainland taxi brands do not operate on Phu Quoc. If someone at the airport offers you a cab from a company you recognise from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, it is not genuine. Stick to Mai Linh or Grab.
Pre-Booked Private Transfer — When Is It Worth It?
A private transfer means a driver or small vehicle arranged in advance, typically through your accommodation or a local operator. The driver holds a sign at arrivals, helps with bags, and goes directly to your property with no stops. Cost for the airport-to-Ong-Lang run: typically $18-25 USD (check current rates — these shift with fuel prices and the property offering it).
That is more than Grab on a quiet day, and about the same as a metered taxi at peak hours. The value is not price — it is certainty. You land after a long connection, you are tired, and the driver is there. No app, no negotiation, no standing on the road with luggage. We've been running this service since 2021 after one too many guests arrived at midnight to find the Grab queue jammed and the rank taxis quoting triple rates. If you're arriving late, with family, or with a lot of gear, just book it.
Ask your accommodation about their transfer when you make the booking. For our bungalows at Ong Lang, message us on WhatsApp with your flight number and arrival time and we'll sort it out directly.
Xe Om (Motorbike Taxi) — Cheapest, with Conditions
Xe om drivers — motorbike taxis — wait outside the terminal and will take you to Ong Lang for 150,000-200,000 VND ($6-8 USD). Bargain beforehand; the opening ask is often higher. The ride takes 35-40 minutes, similar to a car.
The practical limit is luggage. A small daypack is fine. A carry-on spinner and you're balancing it between your knees for 35 minutes on a busy road — it is not comfortable and it is not safe. If your bag fits in an overhead locker and no more, xe om works. If you've got a checked bag, take a car.
Grab also offers GrabBike — the metered version of the same thing. If you prefer the transparency of an app price, that's the cleaner choice. Same luggage caveat applies. What the Ong Lang area looks like when you arrive.

What to Actually Do When You Land at PQC
Phu Quoc Airport is small — single arrivals hall, bags come out fast. You will be through customs and at the exit in 15-25 minutes from touchdown on a typical international flight. Domestic flights are even quicker.
If you didn't buy a SIM before arrival, do it now — the kiosk is inside the arrivals hall before you exit. A 7-day data-only Viettel SIM costs around 70,000-100,000 VND and covers the whole island easily. This is what enables Grab. Without it you're relying on the rank.
Get VND from the ATMs inside the hall (Vietcombank and Vietinbank are both present). Pull out at least 500,000-700,000 VND for the transfer plus a tip and a meal — Ong Lang has ATMs but the nearest is in Duong Dong, 5 km back south. Not urgent, but don't arrive cashless if you can help it.
One thing we tell guests who are taking Grab: type the destination as "Ong Lang Beach, Phu Quoc" and confirm the pin on the map before you confirm the booking. The district has a handful of roads and some properties share similar names. If you're coming to us, share your bungalow booking confirmation with the driver — the address is clearer than any map pin. Full Ong Lang area map and property location guide.
On the road north from the airport: the first 15 km is straightforward dual carriageway. You'll pass the turn-off for Long Beach bungalows (if that's where you're staying, tell the driver; the junction is easy to miss). Continuing north you'll enter Duong Dong briefly, then the road gets quieter as you head up toward Ong Lang. The coast appears on your left. You are nearly there. About the Authors
We've run bungalows on Phu Quoc since 2018, first on Long Beach and later expanding to Ong Lang. In that time we've picked up guests from the airport, watched them negotiate with taxi drivers at midnight, and had a few too many calls that started with "we're in a cab and the driver doesn't know where Ong Lang is." This guide is what we now send to every guest before they fly. If the prices here have drifted, send us a message — we check this page a couple of times a year.
