Duong Dong Market Guide for Bungalow Guests on Phu Quoc
By Phu Quoc Bungalow Owners · Updated October 2026 · 7 min read
- Night market (Chợ Đêm) — food stalls, souvenirs, open every evening 6–11 PM; 2.5–3 km from Long Beach bungalows.
- Morning market (Chợ Dương Đông) — fresh fish, squid, crab; best selection before 8 AM; cheaper than any restaurant.
- What to buy: Phu Quoc pepper, fish sauce, dried squid; skip the generic tourist stuff.
- Budget base logic: bungalows on Long Beach put you 3 km from town — cheap food nearby, beach right outside.
- Cash only at market stalls; ATMs 200–400 m from the night market entrance.
- Duong Dong is the main town and transport hub — motorbike rentals, ATMs, pharmacies, SIM cards all here.
What Is the Duong Dong Night Market Actually Like?
Chợ Đêm Phú Quốc — the Phu Quoc night market — runs every evening along Bach Dang street in Duong Dong town, roughly parallel to the river. It opens around 6 PM and most stalls wrap up by 10 or 11 PM. This is not a sanitised tourist attraction. It's a real market that happens to attract a lot of visitors, which means the food is mostly genuine and the souvenir section is mostly the same things you've seen at every beach market in Vietnam.
The food side is the point. Grilled corn goes for around 15,000–20,000 VND per cob. Bánh mì — stuffed Vietnamese baguettes — are 20,000–30,000 VND depending on filling. Spring rolls and rice paper wraps are assembled in front of you, and the woman at the stall near the river end (there's usually only one selling that style of fresh roll) moves fast enough that the queue doesn't feel long. The mango sticky rice near the central fountain section sells out by 8:30 PM most nights. I'd get there by 7:30 PM if that's your target.
Grilled seafood is sold at the night market too, but the pricing here is restaurant-level — 200,000–400,000 VND for a grilled squid plate, for instance. If you want seafood on a budget, the morning market is the better choice. The night market's seafood stalls work fine as a full dinner option if you don't want to cook; just know what you're paying for. Full Duong Dong town guide here.
From the central Long Beach bungalow strip, the night market is about 2.5–3 km by road — 8–10 minutes on a motorbike along Tran Hung Dao. You can walk it (30–35 minutes along the same street) but most guests ride or take Grab. Parking at the market is chaotic; motorbikes pile up on any available kerb space and nobody worries about it.
What Does the Duong Dong Morning Market Sell — and When Should You Go?
Chợ Dương Đông is a covered wet market near the Duong Dong river bridge. It doesn't look like much from the outside — a low concrete building, a few motorbikes, women with baskets. Inside, the floor is wet and the smell is unmistakably fish-market, which either draws you in immediately or tells you this is not your scene.
The market opens from around 5 AM. The best seafood is gone by 8 AM — not because the vendors pack up, but because the premium catch (whole squid, live crab, tiger prawns) gets picked over early by local restaurant buyers. By 9 AM you're looking at what's left. If you want the full selection at fair prices, aim for 6–7 AM.
Rough price ranges for 2025–2026: whole squid at 80,000–130,000 VND/kg, tiger prawns at 200,000–350,000 VND/kg, clams (nghêu) at 40,000–70,000 VND/kg. These shift with season and catch — treat them as orientation, not a guarantee. The vegetable section in the same building sells tomatoes, morning glory, lemongrass, and chilies at local prices that make the supermarket on the main road look overpriced. More on budget eating near bungalows here.
One practical note: our bungalows have a shared outdoor kitchen with a gas hob and basic utensils, so buying from the morning market and cooking is genuinely possible. A pot, a pan, a knife. People do it. If you buy live shellfish, cook them the same morning. Don't leave them until evening — the kitchen has no cold storage for raw seafood.
What Should You Actually Buy at the Duong Dong Markets?
Two things are actually from here: Phu Quoc pepper and Phu Quoc fish sauce.
The black pepper grown on the island's farms is legitimately good — aromatic in a way that generic supermarket pepper isn't. You can buy it whole at the night market for roughly 80,000–150,000 VND for a 100–200 g bag. Phu Quoc fish sauce (nước mắm) has protected geographical status and is produced from the island's anchovies; a 500 ml bottle of decent quality runs 50,000–120,000 VND depending on the brand and protein content. Buy two. You'll wish you had.
Dried squid is the third reliable item — sold in flat, pressed sheets and eaten as a snack or torn into strips as a beer accompaniment. Good dried squid is chewy and smells intensely of the sea. The cheaper versions at the night market are fine; the slightly pricier ones at the morning market come from fishermen who dried them themselves.
The souvenir stalls sell the same shell jewelry, painted coconut shells, and "I ♥ Phu Quoc" T-shirts as every beach market in Southeast Asia. Nothing wrong with buying them if you want them; just know the first price is not the real price. Opening offers for souvenir items are typically 2–3× what sellers will accept after a polite counter-offer. Don't get stressed about it — it's expected on both sides.
Pearl shops cluster around the night market and along the main street. Phu Quoc does have a pearl farming industry; most of the pearl jewelry at tourist markets is real cultured pearl, but quality varies. If you want to buy a meaningful piece, the shops attached to actual farms (a few are on the northern part of the island) are more reliable than night-market stalls.
Night Market vs Morning Market: Quick Comparison
Both markets are in Duong Dong town, roughly 2.5–3 km from Long Beach bungalows by road:
| Market | Hours | Best for | Price level | Cash needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Night market (Chợ Đêm) | 6–11 PM daily | Street food, souvenirs, pepper, fish sauce | Tourist — negotiate souvenirs; food fair | Yes, all stalls |
| Morning market (Chợ Dương Đông) | 5 AM – noon (best before 8 AM) | Fresh seafood, vegetables, local staples | Local — significantly cheaper than restaurants | Yes, all vendors |
Does Staying Near Duong Dong Make Sense for Budget Travellers?
Duong Dong is Phu Quoc's main town — the only real concentration of services on the island. ATMs, pharmacies, motorbike rental shops, SIM card sellers, hardware stores, local restaurants, the hospital. If you stay far from it, you'll need to make a significant ride every time you need something ordinary. This matters more than people expect when they're planning.
Bungalows on Long Beach put you 2.5–3 km from the town centre — close enough to reach in under 10 minutes on a motorbike, far enough that you're not sleeping above a bar. This is the sweet spot for a budget trip: you eat cheaply at the morning and night markets, stock up on necessities without a 20-minute ride, and still have the beach outside your door each morning.
Phu Quoc Airport is southeast of Duong Dong, roughly 9–10 km from our Long Beach location. Transport options: Grab is the most reliable (typical fare 120,000–180,000 VND from the airport to Long Beach bungalows); Mai Linh taxis also cover the island. If you're arriving mid-morning and want to make an efficient first day, the airport is between you and the morning market, but that timing rarely works out given airport processing.

What Else Is Near Duong Dong Worth Knowing About?
The Dinh Cau temple sits at the mouth of the Duong Dong river, about 500 m from the night market on foot. It's a small fishing shrine on a rocky outcrop — dedicated to the sea goddess and used by the local fishing community before boats go out. Worth a 20-minute detour, especially at dusk when the shrine lights up and you can see the fishing boats gathering at the river mouth. Low tourist density compared to the market.
Fish sauce factories are clustered within 1–2 km of the town centre. A couple of them allow visitors during business hours. The smell is distinctive — fermented anchovy, essentially — but the process is genuinely interesting if you've never seen a traditional fish sauce operation. The barrels are enormous. Hung Thanh is one factory name that comes up for visits; call ahead to confirm current opening hours as they change.
The Duong Dong river itself — or rather the short walkable estuary stretch near the bridge — is pleasant at low tide. Fishing boats moor along the banks, women sell vegetables from boats in the morning, and the bridge gives you a view up toward the mangroves. The whole walkable stretch near town is about 700 m. Don't confuse this with the full river, which runs inland for around 15 km to higher ground — the scenic part is just the estuary.
Duong Dong is also where the northern Long Beach bar strip begins — the cluster of beach bars, restaurants, and sun-lounger setups that runs from roughly the Mercure hotel southward. If you want a beer on the sand after the market, this is the logical sequence: market at 7 PM, walk or ride to the beach bars by 9 PM. More details in the Duong Dong area guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Duong Dong night market open every night?
Yes, Duong Dong night market (Chợ Đêm Phú Quốc) runs every evening, typically from around 6 PM until 10 or 11 PM. It does not close on weekdays. During Vietnamese national holidays it gets considerably busier and some stalls extend their hours, but the market itself operates year-round.
What is the Duong Dong morning market and when does it open?
The morning market (Chợ Dương Đông) is a covered wet market near the Duong Dong river bridge where local vendors sell fresh fish, shellfish, vegetables, and everyday groceries. It opens from around 5 AM and the best seafood selection is gone by 8 AM. If you want whole squid or live crab at the best price, arrive before 7 AM.
How far is the Duong Dong night market from Long Beach bungalows?
From the central Long Beach bungalow strip, the night market is about 2.5–3 km by road, which takes roughly 8–10 minutes by motorbike or about 30–35 minutes on foot along Tran Hung Dao street. Most bungalow guests ride there or take a Grab.
What food should I eat at the Duong Dong night market?
The grilled corn, bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches), and fresh spring rolls are reliable and cheap — 15,000–30,000 VND each. Grilled seafood is available but priced higher than what you'd pay at the morning market and cook yourself. The mango sticky rice stall near the central fountain is popular; get there before 8:30 PM or it sells out.
What souvenirs are worth buying at the night market?
Phu Quoc pepper (whole black peppercorns from the island's pepper farms) and Phu Quoc fish sauce (nước mắm) are the two things actually produced locally and worth taking home. Dried squid is also popular. Most other items — T-shirts, shell jewelry, carved coconut — are the same as any Vietnamese tourist market. Expect to negotiate; first asking prices for souvenirs are typically 2–3× what sellers will accept.
How much does fresh seafood cost at the Duong Dong morning market?
Prices shift with season and catch, but rough 2025–2026 ranges: whole squid at 80,000–130,000 VND/kg, tiger prawns at 200,000–350,000 VND/kg, clams (nghêu) at 40,000–70,000 VND/kg. These are uncooked market prices. The same seafood cooked at a restaurant will cost 2–4× more. Prices always change — treat these as orientation, not a guarantee.
Can I cook in a bungalow on Phu Quoc?
It depends on the property. Our bungalows have a shared outdoor kitchen with a gas hob and basic utensils, so guests who want to cook morning-market seafood absolutely can. A pot, pan, and knife are there. We ask people to clean up after, which almost everyone does. If you're buying live shellfish at the market, pick them up the same morning you plan to cook them.
Is Duong Dong a good base for a budget trip to Phu Quoc?
Yes — Duong Dong is the main town on the island and has the best concentration of affordable food, local shops, ATMs, and transport connections. Staying in a bungalow on Long Beach puts you within 3 km of the town centre while keeping you on the beach. This is the combination that makes budget travel on Phu Quoc actually work: cheap food and supplies nearby, sea access right outside.
What is near Duong Dong besides the markets?
The Dinh Cau night temple sits at the mouth of the Duong Dong river and is worth a short walk — it's a small fishing shrine with a good view over the estuary, usually lit up at night. The Duong Dong fish sauce factories (a few open for visits) are within 1–2 km of the town centre. The northern end of Long Beach and its bar strip are also part of Duong Dong town.
Do vendors at the night market accept card payments?
Almost all stalls at the night market are cash-only. A few larger sit-down restaurants on the market perimeter take cards, but the food stalls and souvenir sellers do not. Bring VND in small denominations — 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 notes are useful. The nearest ATMs are about 200–400 m from the market entrance on Nguyen Trung Truc street.
About the Authors
We've run bungalows on Long Beach since 2018 and made the walk to Duong Dong market more times than we can count — usually for morning squid, occasionally for sticky rice at the wrong hour. This guide reflects what we tell guests at check-in when they ask how to eat well without spending much. If prices have shifted or something here is out of date, let us know and we'll update it.
