What Is a Long Beach Sunset Actually Like?

From our bungalow decks on the central section of Long Beach, the sunset is the main event of most evenings. The beach faces due west, so the sun drops in a straight line toward the horizon — no angle, no partial obscuring by headlands. On a clear dry-season evening the sky goes yellow, then orange, then a brief but real red in the 10 minutes before the sun touches the water. The whole colour sequence from yellow-gold to dark red takes about 20 minutes.

The northern stretch of Long Beach near Duong Dong has anchored fishing boats and a few piers in the mid-distance. Our bungalows sit in the middle section — roughly km 6 to km 10 from Duong Dong — where the beach curves slightly and the foreground is cleaner. Still some boats offshore, but they add to rather than block the view. Most guests end up on the sand by 17:15 in dry season. They rarely regret it.

One practical note: the beach faces west-northwest at the section near us, not pure west. In November and December, the sun tracks slightly south and sets over the water at a slight angle to the right. By April it is tracking more toward the northwest. Neither matters much, but it explains why some photos taken in different months look like they were shot from different beaches.

What Is Sunset Town and How Do You Get There?

Sunset Town is a development by Sun Group at the very southern tip of Phu Quoc, near An Thoi. It is about 25 km by road from our Long Beach bungalows — 35 to 45 minutes by motorbike. The main draws are the Hon Thom cable car (one of the longest over-water cable cars in the world, connecting the main island to Hon Thom island), the Kissing Bridge known as Cau Hon, and a cluster of restaurants and event bars around the waterfront.

The sunset view from Sunset Town faces southwest, toward the An Thoi archipelago. You are not looking at open ocean the way you do on Long Beach — there are the cable car towers and island silhouettes in the frame. It is theatrical rather than raw. Some guests love it for that reason. The Kissing Bridge in particular photographs well around 18:00 because the arched structure frames the lit sky behind it.

Logistics matter here. If you want to arrive in time for sunset, leave Long Beach by 16:15 at the latest to give yourself buffer for the cable car queue (there usually is one) or to find a good viewing spot at the bridge. Check cable car operating hours before you go — they close at a set time in the evening. Coming back from Sunset Town after dark means 25 km on the main road at night; not dangerous, but worth knowing before you go without a plan.

Which Sunset Bars Are Worth Sitting at?

Long Beach has a handful of bars with proper beach access that open before sunset and stay on into the evening. On the central strip (Tran Hung Dao road near km 7 to km 9) there are sand-floor open-air spots that set up sun loungers facing the water from around 15:00. Most sell cocktails, cold Saigon beer at 25,000–35,000 VND, and some kind of food — grilled squid, spring rolls, fried rice. Rory's Beach Bar around km 8 has a raised deck that puts you above the beach level, which gives a slightly better sight line over the water than sitting on the sand does.

At Ong Lang, the terrace at Nest by AIA — which is part of the Mango Bay resort property — is positioned to face open water. It is 15 minutes north by motorbike from our bungalows. They serve food and drinks. Worth going once if you're already riding up for the sunset view.

We don't recommend driving to Sunset Town specifically for a bar. The distance, the return ride in the dark, and the fact that the bars there are designed for resort guests who are already on-site make it a logistically awkward detour from a Long Beach bungalow base.

Sunset time shifts through the year. In the dry season (November to February) the sun goes down roughly 17:45 to 18:00 local time. In the wet season and summer (May to August) it sets closer to 18:30 to 18:45. Ong Lang bay is our pick. The bay curves slightly northward, so you see the sun drop over open Gulf water without piers, boats, or buildings in the frame. Can I see the sunset from a garden bungalow, or do I need beachfront?

From a garden bungalow set back 40 to 80 metres from the waterline you can typically see the sunset sky over the roofline and tree canopy, but not the sun touching the water. For the full horizon-level sunset you need a beachfront unit or to walk 2 to 3 minutes to the beach. Garden bungalows are roughly $10 to $15 cheaper per night — for some guests that trade-off makes sense.

Does rain block the Phu Quoc sunset?

A full overcast sky does block the colour display — you get a grey fade rather than orange. However, afternoon rain on Phu Quoc often clears by 17:00, especially outside peak monsoon months (June and July). If the sky is partly cloudy by late afternoon, stay put — broken cloud cover frequently produces stronger colour than a clear sky does.
