What Kayaks Do We Actually Keep at the Bungalow?

Two single sit-on-top kayaks, both bright yellow (hard to lose), stored on the beach just past the hammock area. They go out free with any stay — no deposit, no sign-up sheet, nothing to arrange. If both are being used when you want one, the wait is usually under 30 minutes.

I bought the second kayak after a couple spent an entire morning waiting their turn and mentioned it at check-out. That was embarrassing. The plastic is heavy-duty sit-on-top, stable enough that the first time one of our guests capsized was in his third year of visiting — and he was showing off. Life jackets are in the blue bin next to the kayaks. Wearing one is not optional.

For SUP boards, we don't own any — storage is the problem with inflatables in a tropical climate (mould in the valves if they stay packed). Rentals are available along Long Beach; see the rentals section below. We do have two paddles and two spare vests in case a guest brings their own inflatable SUP.

Why Ong Lang Bay Is the Calmest Spot on the West Coast

Eight kilometres north of our bungalows by road, Ong Lang has a headland at its southern end that takes most of the swell before it reaches the inner bay. On days when Long Beach has visible chop, the water inside Ong Lang can be noticeably flatter — not always, but often enough that we tell guests to make the 15-minute motorbike ride if conditions look borderline at the bungalow.

The bay is roughly 600 m across and 400 m deep, with a sandy bottom in the middle and patches of rock toward the headlands. Water clarity in dry season is good — you can see 3-4 m down on a calm day. There are no motorised boat launches inside the bay itself, which makes it genuinely pleasant to paddle without worrying about speedboats.

What Are the Best Paddle Routes from the Bungalow?

We have two routes we suggest, depending on how much time you have.

The short route (45-60 minutes): Paddle south from the bungalow beach, staying 100-150 m offshore, for about 1.5 km to the small rocky headland at the southern end of the Long Beach strip. The water is shallow enough to see the bottom most of the way — 1-3 m depending on your position. There are a few coral patches 200-300 m offshore on this stretch. Pull onto the rocks at the headland for a rest, then paddle back. Easy pace, no open-water exposure.

The longer route (2-2.5 hours, experienced paddlers): North from the bungalow, keeping within 300 m of shore, up toward the fishing village at the northern end of Long Beach. You can pull in at the fishing village, walk up to the road for a drink, and either paddle back or arrange a pickup by motorbike. The northern section has some boat traffic from fishing vessels leaving in the morning, so start early and stay visible.

Do not paddle toward the islands visible offshore. Those are part of the An Thoi archipelago, 15-20 km away by open water. The channel has strong currents and afternoon winds that are not visible from shore until you're in them.

Do the bungalows include a free kayak?

What is the best time of year for kayaking near Phu Quoc bungalows?

November through April — the dry season — gives the calmest conditions for kayaking on Phu Quoc's west coast. Winds are light, swells on Long Beach rarely exceed 0.3 m, and mornings are typically glassy until around 9 AM. May through October brings the southwest monsoon, which can push 0.5-1 m swells onto the west coast — manageable for experienced paddlers but not ideal for beginners.

Which bay is best for kayaking near Ong Lang?

The southern pocket of Ong Lang Bay, roughly 8 km north of our bungalows by road, is the best spot for a calm kayak session on the west coast. The headland at the bay's southern end blocks most swell from the southwest, leaving the inner 400-500 m of water consistently flatter than open Long Beach. There are no motorised boat launches inside the bay, which matters.

Can I kayak to the small islands visible from Long Beach?

The islands visible from central Long Beach — part of the An Thoi archipelago — are 15-20 km offshore by open water and should not be attempted in a recreational kayak. Winds and currents between the islands can shift quickly. The safe kayak range from Long Beach is within 300-400 m of shore in dry-season conditions.

Where can I rent a SUP board near Phu Quoc bungalows?

Several beach operators along Long Beach rent SUP boards, typically for 150,000-250,000 VND per hour in 2026 (check current rates as these shift seasonally). The nearest rental point to our bungalows is about 400 m north along the beach. Ong Lang has at least one operator near the beach access road — availability can be patchy outside peak season, so calling ahead is worth it.

Is Bai Sao good for kayaking or SUP?

Bai Sao on the southeast coast is genuinely excellent for SUP — shallow, sandy-bottomed, and sheltered from the southwest monsoon that makes west-coast paddling rough in summer. The water is so clear in dry season you can see the bottom at 2-3 m depth. Bai Sao does not have a dedicated kayak rental, but a few beach vendors will sometimes have boards; the easiest option is to bring your own inflatable board if SUP is a priority.

Are there guided kayak tours near Phu Quoc bungalows?

A handful of operators in Duong Dong (about 6 km north of our bungalows) run guided sea kayak excursions to mangrove channels north of the town and to small coves along the coast. Sessions typically run 2-3 hours and cost 400,000-700,000 VND per person in 2026 (prices vary; check current rates). We can recommend a contact we have used with guests — ask at check-in.

What safety rules should I follow when kayaking from the bungalow beach?

Stay within 300-400 m of shore; always wear the life jacket stored with the kayak; avoid paddling after 10 AM on days when the wind is already picking up, because the afternoon chop builds fast on the west coast; and tell someone at the bungalow before you go out. We ask that children under 12 only use the kayak with an adult in the second seat or within wading depth.

The only condition worth skipping: if there is visible white-capping on the water, wait until afternoon when the sea sometimes settles again, or try the next morning.
