Suoi Tranh or Da Ban — Which Waterfall Should You Visit?

Suoi Tranh sits on the southern edge of the national park, about 18 km from Long Beach — 25 minutes by motorbike on a good road. The path from the ticket booth to the falls is easy, mostly flat, around 1.5 km through light forest. Good for people who want the jungle atmosphere without serious hiking. The water runs year-round, though the flow drops noticeably in March and April at the end of the dry season.

Da Ban is a different proposition. It sits further north, deeper into the park, and the experience involves scrambling over large granite boulders along a river course. The falls are more dramatic — a series of cascades over rock shelves rather than a single drop. Go in the wet season (May-October) and the volume is impressive; go in February and it's calmer but still very photogenic. The road to Da Ban can be rough after heavy rain, and the scramble is not suitable for young children or people with mobility issues. Allow 3-4 hours for the trip from our bungalows.

Where Is the Best Snorkelling for Guests Staying on Long Beach?

Offshore from Long Beach, there are coral patches 200-400 metres from the waterline. The small wooden boats that operate from the beach can take you out for around 50,000-100,000 VND per person. Visibility is at its best in December and January — water is clear enough to see 8-10 metres down on a good day. By March, plankton blooms can cut visibility to 2-3 metres for a week or two at a stretch. This is decent snorkelling, not spectacular.

For the reef diving and snorkelling that guests search for on Phu Quoc, the destination is the An Thoi archipelago — a group of small islands off the southern tip. Beach Walks and Low-Key Nature Watching Near the Bungalow

Not every nature activity requires a half-day ride. The stretch of Long Beach south of our bungalows — heading toward Phu Quoc Prison — is about 4 km of mostly empty sand. Early morning is the right time. Sunrise in August is around 5:40-5:50 AM and comes up fast over the eastern hills; the light hits the water at an angle that makes the whole beach look different from how it appears at midday. Sand crabs scatter in every direction as you walk. The beach is firm and flat, so even a short walk south of 20 minutes reaches genuinely quiet stretches.

The garden around the bungalows themselves is worth a look at dusk — we have a couple of monitor lizards who have lived under the bamboo for years, and a family of fruit bats that starts flying circuits at around 6:30 PM. No fanfare, no tour required. Just stand outside with a cold drink.

For bird-watchers, the road north along the coast toward Ong Lang goes through a section of scrubby vegetation where bee-eaters perch on the power lines most mornings. We had a guest spend two mornings there in January with a camera. He sent us the photos. We now have them on our wall.
