Day 1 — Arrival and the Beach Right at Your Door
Phu Quoc Airport is in the southeast of the island. From there to our Long Beach bungalows is roughly 9-10 km by road — about 15-20 minutes by Grab or Mai Linh taxi, costing around 100,000-130,000 VND. Not a long arrival transfer.
Once you're checked in, Long Beach is literally outside. Most of our bungalows are 10-50 metres from the waterline — no transfers, no shuttle, just walk out the gate. The afternoon is genuinely free. A few guests ask if they should do something organised on arrival day. My answer is always no. You flew here. Go lie in the sea.
The water temperature on Long Beach runs 27-30°C depending on season. In the dry season (November-April) the surface is calm and you can swim out 100-200 metres with no trouble. In the wet season the west coast gets some swell — still swimmable most days, but not as flat. Either way, Day 1 is for settling in. There's a good seafood place a 5-minute walk north of our gate — ask at check-in and we'll point you to it. They do grilled barracuda that's consistently good; skip the tourist set menu and just order by the piece.
If you arrive early enough and have energy, you can walk to the main Long Beach strip heading north — there are beach bars, hammock spots, and a few shops selling reef shoes (useful for days 2 and 3). But nothing on Day 1 is required.
Day 2 — An Thoi Island Snorkelling: What to Expect
The An Thoi archipelago sits off the southern tip of Phu Quoc — a cluster of small limestone islands with coral reefs and reasonably clear water in the dry season. This is the main snorkelling excursion from the island, and if you only do one organised trip during your five nights, this is the one.
Boats depart from An Thoi port, which is at the south end of the island, roughly 25 km by road from our bungalows. Leave by 7:00-7:15 AM to reach the port by 8:00 AM — that's when most tours load. You can book the tour through us at check-in, or directly at the pier the day before. Standard day trips visit 3-4 reef sites, include a floating lunch, and return to port by around 3:30-4:00 PM.
A few things worth knowing. The coral coverage varies by site — some spots are genuinely good, others are patchy. December through March gives the best underwater visibility. The boat ride between islands can be rough if the south wind is up; if you get seasick easily, take something before you board. And bring your own snorkel if you care about fit — the hire masks on most boats range from adequate to poor. More on the specific snorkelling spots here.
After you're back at An Thoi port around 4:00 PM, the ride back to the bungalow is 25 km — you'll be home by 5:00 PM with enough energy for dinner but probably nothing else. Day 2 is a full day.
Day 3 — Bai Sao Beach: the South Coast Half-Day
Bai Sao is the beach people mean when they say "white sand Phu Quoc." It's on the southeast coast, facing east — so it catches the morning calm while the west coast is still in shadow, and it stays protected from the southwest monsoon when Long Beach gets choppy. The water is shallow and sandy-bottomed, which makes it particularly good for non-swimmers or anyone travelling with kids.
From Long Beach, Bai Sao is about 25 km south by road, 35-45 minutes on a motorbike. The route goes south past An Thoi town, then cuts left on a smaller road through rubber trees. I normally suggest leaving around 9:00 AM to get there before the day-tripper buses arrive. By 10:00 AM on a weekend it fills up. Full Bai Sao guide with tips on timing and where to park here.
There are beach restaurants at Bai Sao selling fresh seafood, cold drinks, and sun loungers for around 50,000-70,000 VND each (check current rates — they change). Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday if you have flexibility. The difference between a weekday and a Saturday at Bai Sao is significant.
Plan to leave Bai Sao by 1:00-2:00 PM to be back at the bungalow mid-afternoon. That gives you a free afternoon on Long Beach — or just a hammock and a book. Day 3 is intentionally lighter than Day 2.
Day 4 — Ong Lang Sunset Then Duong Dong Night Market
Ong Lang bay is 8 km north of the central Long Beach strip — 15 minutes on a motorbike heading up the west coast road. The bay curves slightly, which keeps it calmer than exposed Long Beach in a light swell. The sea floor has a mix of sand and rocky patches, so bring water shoes. Good swimming in the dry season, decent snorkelling close to the rocks.
The reason I put Ong Lang on Day 4 rather than Day 2 is the sunset. I'd rather guests see it here than on Long Beach. Ong Lang faces west over open water with no piers or large buildings interrupting the view. Arrive around 4:30-5:00 PM and stay through the full sunset — on a clear day in the dry season it lasts about 20 minutes and goes through orange, red, and a brief purple-grey before it's gone. Bring a jacket if you're visiting October-February; the breeze off the water gets cold once the sun drops. More on the best sunset spots for bungalow guests.
After sunset, ride north another 8 km to Duong Dong town for the night market on Vo Thi Sau Street. It opens around 5:00 PM and runs until 10:00 PM. The seafood stalls are the main draw — grilled squid, crab, mantis shrimp priced by weight, local Phu Quoc pepper. Arrive between 5:30 and 6:30 PM to get a table while the best items are still available. The market is casual; prices are reasonable rather than cheap, but it's not a tourist trap either. Pick what looks fresh, agree on the price before grilling, and you'll be fine.
Duong Dong is about 6-8 km north of our bungalows — after the market, it's a 15-minute ride back south. Easy last night out.
Day 5 — National Park and Waterfalls in the North
The northern third of Phu Quoc is national park — dense forest, dirt trails, and a few accessible spots for visitors without hiking experience. The most straightforward target is Suoi Tranh waterfall, inside the park boundary about 15 km northeast of Duong Dong. From Long Beach that's a 30-35 minute ride north, passing through Duong Dong and continuing up the park road.
The falls run year-round, but the volume is highest from June to October when the wet season fills the streams. In the dry season (November-April) they're smaller but still pleasant, and the path through the forest is drier and easier to walk. Entry costs a small fee — check current rates at the gate. The walking trail from the car park to the main falls is about 500 metres one way, uneven ground, some steps.
If you want more nature on Day 5, the Phu Quoc National Park road continues north past Suoi Tranh and there are a few viewpoints accessible by motorbike. The north coast has a different character to the tourist south — smaller fishing villages, unpaved roads, fewer services. It's worth an hour of wandering if you have time. More on the nature options accessible from a bungalow base.
Most guests have early afternoon check-out or an evening flight. Back from the north by noon works comfortably. If your flight is from Phu Quoc Airport in the southeast, the drive from Long Beach is 9-10 km — about 15-20 minutes. No buffer needed beyond the usual airport check-in window.
Motorbike, Transport, and Timing — the Practical Details
The 5-night itinerary above requires independent transport for Days 3, 4, and 5. Day 2 (An Thoi tour) is boat-based and organised — you can get there by Grab if you don't ride. For everything else, a motorbike is far more practical than taxis: the distances are 8-45 km, roads are good, and the freedom to stop when you want is part of the point.
We include a free motorbike with bungalow stays of 3 nights or more — it's the single thing that most changes how much guests see. If you're staying fewer than 3 nights, rental shops within 10 minutes' walk of our gate charge roughly 120,000-150,000 VND per day (check current rates; they track fuel prices).
| Day | Destination | Direction from Long Beach | Distance / time | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Long Beach (at bungalow) | — | 0 km | Walk |
| 2 | An Thoi port → islands | South | ~25 km / 35-40 min | Motorbike or Grab to port, then speedboat |
| 3 | Bai Sao beach | South/southeast | ~25 km / 35-45 min | Motorbike |
| 4 | Ong Lang + Duong Dong | North | ~8 km / 15 min; ~6-8 km to town | Motorbike |
| 5 | Suoi Tranh / national park | North | ~45 km / 30-35 min via Duong Dong | Motorbike |
If you prefer not to ride, Grab covers the island. A car from Long Beach to Bai Sao costs roughly 150,000-200,000 VND each way; to An Thoi port about 130,000-170,000 VND. The app works well in the south and central areas; coverage gets thinner the further north you go. For the national park day, a motorbike or rented car is the practical answer.
Does the Day Order Actually Matter?
Loosely, yes. Day 2 (An Thoi snorkelling) requires booking a tour in advance — most boats need you to confirm the evening before at minimum. Do this on Day 1. Day 3 (Bai Sao) shares the same south road as Day 2, so if you want to combine them into a longer Day 2 you can — Bai Sao is roughly 10 km before An Thoi port heading south, so you could stop on the way there or the way back. We don't recommend it; both days benefit from being given proper time.
Day 4 (Ong Lang + Duong Dong) is deliberately a slower, half-day pace after two busier south-coast days. You could swap Day 4 and Day 3 without much consequence. What I'd avoid is putting Day 5 (national park) before Day 2 — the north road is a longer ride and you want the An Thoi tour earlier in your trip when you're fresher and the weather is more predictable.
One common variation: guests who want a second beach day at Bai Sao swap Day 5 for another trip south and skip the national park entirely. Completely fine. The waterfall is genuinely worth the ride, but if white-sand beaches are the priority, two south coast days is a reasonable choice. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 nights enough for Phu Quoc based in a bungalow?
Five nights is a solid amount of time for Phu Quoc when you are based in a bungalow on the west coast. You can cover the main southern snorkelling trip to An Thoi, a day at Bai Sao beach in the southeast, a sunset afternoon at Ong Lang 8 km north, an evening in Duong Dong town, and a half-day in the national park and waterfalls in the north — without feeling rushed.
How far is Phu Quoc Airport from Long Beach bungalows?
Phu Quoc Airport sits in the southeast of the island, roughly 9-10 km by road from the central Long Beach bungalow strip. A Grab car or Mai Linh taxi from the airport takes 15-20 minutes and costs around 100,000-130,000 VND depending on traffic and exact drop-off point.
What is the An Thoi archipelago snorkelling trip like?
The An Thoi islands are a cluster of small islands off the southern tip of Phu Quoc, about 45 minutes by speedboat from An Thoi port. A typical day trip visits 3-4 snorkelling spots with coral and reef fish, includes lunch on the boat, and returns by mid-afternoon. Most tours depart between 8:00 and 8:30 AM from An Thoi port, which is roughly 25 km south of Long Beach by road.
Can I visit Bai Sao beach on a bungalow trip?
Yes — Bai Sao is a practical half-day trip from Long Beach bungalows. The beach is roughly 25 km south by road, about 35-45 minutes on a motorbike heading south through An Thoi town. Bai Sao faces southeast, so it stays calmer than the west-coast beaches when the southwest monsoon is running, and it has white sand and shallow clear water ideal for swimming.
Which direction is Ong Lang from Long Beach?
Ong Lang is about 8 km north of the central Long Beach strip, roughly 15 minutes on a motorbike. The beach is a small sheltered bay on the west coast and is best in late afternoon — the sun sets over open water here with no piers or large hotel towers blocking the view.
What is there to do in Duong Dong town on a bungalow trip?
Duong Dong is the main town on Phu Quoc, about 6-8 km north of the central Long Beach bungalow cluster by road. The night market on Vo Thi Sau Street runs every evening from around 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM and sells fresh grilled seafood, Vietnamese snacks, local pepper products, and souvenirs. The market is casual and priced for locals, not tourists.
Are the waterfalls in north Phu Quoc worth visiting?
Suoi Tranh waterfall in the national park is the most accessible waterfall on Phu Quoc. It sits inside the national park boundary, roughly 15 km northeast of Duong Dong town. The falls run year-round but are strongest from June to October during the wet season. From Long Beach, the drive is about 30-35 minutes north through the park road.
Do I need a motorbike for a 5-night bungalow itinerary on Phu Quoc?
A motorbike makes the 5-night itinerary much easier and cheaper. The south coast An Thoi trip usually involves a tour boat so no bike needed there, but Bai Sao, Ong Lang, Duong Dong, and the northern park are all more practical by motorbike than by Grab. We include a free motorbike with bungalow stays of 3 nights or more.
What time does the An Thoi snorkelling boat depart?
Most An Thoi island day-trip boats depart between 8:00 and 8:30 AM from An Thoi port at the southern tip of Phu Quoc. An Thoi port is about 25 km south of Long Beach by road — plan to leave your bungalow by 7:00-7:15 AM to reach the port in time, especially if you are picking up tickets at the pier.
What is the best day to visit the Duong Dong night market?
The Duong Dong night market runs every evening, but Thursday through Saturday evenings tend to be busiest. For a relaxed experience without the crowds, Tuesday or Wednesday works well. Either way, arrive between 5:30 and 6:30 PM to get a table at the seafood stalls before the best items sell out.
About the Authors
We've run bungalows on Long Beach since 2018 and have watched hundreds of guests plan their days. Most arrive with no plan and leave wishing they had done the south coast earlier and saved a lighter day for the end. This itinerary is what we now hand guests at check-in. It's not the only way to spend five nights on Phu Quoc, but it covers the island's geography properly — south, west, north — without backtracking or wasted hours.
